Good fences, and purple paint, make good neighbors
Among the many lessons we gleaned from Eric at Texas A&M Forest Services, one of the most valuable is that "good fences make good neighbors" and where you don't have fences you paint purple stripes on the trees. With a pond, you can never be too careful. In November we started working the plan to establish our boundaries, putting up no trespassing signs and painting our trees with 8-10" stripes of paint every 50-100ft along the perimeter. In Texas we have what is called "The Purple Paint Law." Who knew? The purple painted stripe is an indicator to others that when they come in, they are trespassing. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the purple paint establishes the boundary and must be vertical lines of "not less than 8" in length and not less than 1" in width; placed so that the bottom of the mark is not less than 3' from the ground or more than 5' from the ground and no more than 100' apart." Goodness we have a lot to learn, but are pleased that we are not learning the hard way. We have a lot of teachers at our disposal, and we are finding that this journey is not a lonely one.
We also marked our entrance with a coral gate. It felt like our first step in making "our place" ours. We look forward to welcoming the many friends and family members who will cross through the family gate to celebrate special occasions and make memories with us.
